The Boat Lift
The lift opened in 1900, but there was not enough boat traffic to make the lift economical and it closed in 1911. The boat lift was dismantled in 1927.

The Museum
The old Engine House was restored by volunteers and opened as the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust's Museum.

The Foxton Boat Lift
This section outlines the reasons for building the inclined plane (boat lift) and shows photographs of the plane in operation. It is hoped that the information system will eventually describe the boat lift's operation.

The Foxton Site (locks)
This section describes the Foxton site as it is today and compares what is there today with what was there when the Inclined Plane was operating. It is hoped that the information system will eventually describe the operation of the Foxton Locks and the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust is looking for sponsorship for this.

Background Information

The canal at Foxton is part of a north south link stretching from London to the river Trent. Foxton Locks opened in August 1814 lifted boats 75 feet 2 inches. The narrow (7 feet wide) locks worked well, with only horse drawn vehicles for competition.

When railways became established and the waterways were under threat, the Grand Junction Canal Company constructed the Foxton Barge lift. The lift opened in 1900, but there was not enough boat traffic to make the lift economical and it closed in 1911.The boat lift was dismantled in 1927.

The Foxton Inclined Plane Trust

The Foxton Inclined Plane Trust was formed in 1980 and its ultimate aim is to restore the lift to working order. It has already rebuilt the boiler house which is now the Trust's award winning museum.

The Trust is always trying to improve the presentation of material and to this end it commissioned Interactive Presentations to create a computer based information system using high quality photographic images and audio-visual presentations. Timothy West and Arthur Dungate were the narrators. The first phase of the system was operating at the beginning of August 1996.
