eLearning Environment (Managing Online Learning)

Creating a Successful Learning Environment

To create a successful learning environment a number of steps must take place:

  • Your organisation must be able to define the level of ‘education’ and skill required by your or your customer’s staff. This will be done through a series of meetings to discuss the business objectives and needs.

  • Talk to managers and staff to define how the training can be best implemented.

  • Create a curriculum that is split into short courses aimed, where possible, at particular job skills or knowledge areas.

  • Split the material into short lessons of no longer than 30 minutes.

  • Create E-Assessment modules to test the level of achievement.

  • Create case studies or scenarios in which learners are asked to apply the knowledge and skill learned.

  • Build in an e-Learning Support environment, this could include:
    E-mail
    Bulletin Board
    Online Forum
    Tutor
    Line Manager
    Colleague.

  • All activities will be tracked, recorded by a suitable Learning Management System.

The e-Learning process can also be linked with instructor led training.

The Learning Process/Model Flowchart

This is an idealised learning model of an interactive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) or Learning Management System (LMS). The route each student takes depends upon the outcomes of the tasks undertaken. The process consists of a number of steps:

logo

Step 1: Online Self Assessment
The ‘student’ judges his or her own skill or knowledge level. He or she looks at each of the defined knowledge and skill levels and indicates whether they are proficient in that area.

Step 2: eAssessment
If the student indicates that he or she is proficient in any of the areas, then the student will be tested in that particular area.

Step 3: eLearning
If the student fails any of the areas tested in Step 2 or said no to any of the areas in Step 1, then he or she must carry out the relevant training lessons / modules. These could be online or tutor based or a combination of both.

If the student has passed all the sections and said yes to all the questions in Step 1 then he or she goes to Step 5

Step 4: Retaking eAssessment
When the student has completed the training lessons he or she retakes the Online Assessment. If the test is passed, then the student goes to Step 5. If they fail, then they will be contacted by their tutor / line manager and further study assigned.

Step 5: Finish
Continue to the next part of the curriculum or finish the learning module.

Next you will be able to experience the learning environment for yourself by running the Learning model tutorial.

The Learning Model Tutorial/Simulation

To see the following examples you will need to have a browser capable of viewing Dynamic HTML (Explorer 5.5, Netscape 8.1.2, FireFox 1.5 and later). The applications are optimised for Internet Explorer. Click on the flowchart to enter the Tutorial / Simulation.
Learning Tutorial This tutorial/simulation divides into two sections:-
1) The Learning Management System which tracks the results obtained by the student and controls the courses and assessments seen by the student.
2) The courses and assessment that are actually taken by the student.
A scenario has been defined, in this particular case there is a technical requirement. You as the student are asked to assess your own skill level and then depending on your answer you are directed to online assessment or to online courses.

The tutorial leads you through the learning process with realistic examples of:
online SELF assessment
online assessment (e-Assessment)
online Learning (e-Learning)
online practical (e-practical)
