Crossing some
magnificent scenery, it was built as a wide canal taking boats
up to 70 feet long and 14 feet wide.
The central section from Bath to Newbury is
an artificial cut 57 miles long.
Between Bath and Bradford on Avon
the canal crosses the river Avon by means of two spectacular aqueducts
at Dundas and Avoncliff.
At Devizes it climbs 246 feet
by means of 29 locks.
To improve the water supply two pumping
stations were built, a water powered pumping station at Claverton and
a steam powered pumping station at Crofton.
